Achromatic | Incandescent is a result of my uncovering of modern art, or
more specifically artists such as Robert Rauschenberg and Marcel Duchamp. It is
what they do, or rather what they do not do, that is crucial to their pieces.
An idea is what the piece is, and the thought process their art generates is
also a part of their art.
The initial ideas came from Rauschenberg’s ‘White Paintings’ as I
was engrossed in the way an ‘achromatic’ color such as white operates. “The
white paintings are the airports for the lights, shadows and particles.” John Cage wrote about this piece. White
is the lack of color, some might say, but in actuality white reveals textures,
shadows and relationships between objects. White hence consists of a dichotomy
of being plain and complex simultaneously.
Sculptures are assembled from mass-produced items that are
primarily bought at Lowe’s, their meaning is distorted as they become a part of
an art piece and consequently serve as a commentary of the contemporary consumer
society. Observed in such a manner, the sculptures befit the description of a
‘Readymade’, hence referencing the work such as Duchamp’s.
Photographs of the sculptures suggest the same concern with
mass-production by utilizing the medium (Incandescent lighboxes) that is
commonly used to mediate diverse consumer products.
